Bare Hands by Joseph Inter Da’Poet Mabena

Bare hands that caressed your black Afro
Bare hands that caressed your Afro until you fell asleep
Rough hands with finger that tiptoed from your back to your neck
From your back to your neck to check if Jack was never around
From your back to your neck to feel the warm embrace
From your neck to your face to chase away the gloomy days

Bare hands that greeted…Hi
Greeted hi when you walked into my life
And waved farewell when you hit the road to say goodbye
Bare hands that learned how to spell and write you countless love letters
Love letters to tell you how much they miss you
How they miss giving you that tender touch that left you mesmerized
Although today they may look wrinkled and pale
These hands are hands that drew stars around your bud chicks
And gave form and structure to the ancient hieroglyphics written on your thighs
